Medicinal Edibles and Cannabis Butter

shivabhangAccording to ancient Hindu legend, Lord Shiva gifted humankind with Bhang - a paste of cannabis leaves gently cooked with milk and spices, thus beginning the long history of ingested forms of the cannabis hemp plant as food, tonic and medicine. Today, "edibles" are an important part of many patients' treatment regimine, delivering phytocannabinoids with longer lasting and more subtle effects than inhalation. On a cautionary note, the oral route results in a delayed onset of action sometimes as long as 40 minutes until the effects are experienced, thus making it more difficult to tritrate the correct dose.  Also when cannabis is taken orally it is metabolized in the liver prior to entering the blood stream (first pass metabolism) and the THC is broken down to a more potent psychoactive metabolite.

The heated butterfat extraction of THC and other canabinoids from cannabis flowers and leaves is now a popular way to prepare many medicinal food products. Two of our conference presenters are caregivers that make a cannabis butter for their patients.

An epileptic herself, Valerie and her husband Mike developed strains of medical marijuana over a 27 year period and WAMM conducts research on the efficacy of these strains for different medical conditions, with a peer reviewed study in 2001.
